Open play basketball in the gymnasium at the Howard Center on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and at Beck Recreation Center on Sunday afternoons has been suspended until further notice.
Georgetown County made this decision following a shooting incident that occurred in the parking lot of Howard on July 28 just after closing time and while staff was still in the building. Staff who work the open play hours say they do not currently feel safe to continue. The safety of our staff and those who use our facilities has to come first.
The shooting is currently under investigation by the City of Georgetown Police Department. As more information comes out of the investigation, the county will re-evaluate open play at these facilities.
