Georgetown County had the first session of its inaugural Taxpayer Academy April 6. In celebration of National County Government Month, every Thursday in April residents participating in the class will visit county facilities, meet with county leaders and get an in-depth view of how Georgetown County operates and the services it provides to residents.
In the April 6 session, participants met with County Administrator Angela Christian, Planning and Zoning Director Holly Richardson, Finance Director Karis Langston and Emergency Services Director Brandon Ellis. Christian talked about topics including the port, economic development, affordable housing and how to keep young people from moving to other areas. Langston, Richardson and Ellis gave overviews of their departments and answered questions. Students also participated in a hurricane tabletop exercise.
The county plans to offer the Taxpayer Academy annually as part of National County Government Month. If you'd like to be notified when enrollment opens for future classes, send an email to jbroach@gtcounty.org.
