Throughout June and July, HTC and the Georgetown County Library partnered to produce an exciting series of digital literacy programs for youth in Georgetown County. The series was free and open to area youth ages 4-18. It took place at the library's Carvers Bay branch as an enhanced part of its Summer Reading Program.
Sessions concentrated on teaching crucial digital skills and introducing new technologies through weekly activities designed to strengthen reading, writing, and critical thinking. The workshops linked digital literacy to important health topics, including mental wellness, forms of bullying, physical activity, and hygiene. This approach empowered participating youth with improved digital acumen, as well as valuable knowledge about healthy living.
HTC generously provided a $10,000 grant for technology, equipment, incentives, and speakers to help fund the series. During the two-month period, the Carvers Bay branch hosted 42 sessions with approximately 25 to 30 participants. At the end of July, 25 kids received an Android 14 Tablet and gift cards for successfully completing the digital literacy series.
“We are grateful to HTC for its exceptional generosity and community spirit in providing funding that made this exciting program a reality for youth in Georgetown County," said Library Director Dwight McInvaill. "Through HTC’s support, area youngsters learned how to best use current tech to find credible and up-to-date medical information, while keeping this process fun and engaging.”
Carvers Bay Library Manager Marilynn Lance-Robb, who oversaw implementation of the series, added: “By combining literacy and health education in a digital format, the programs supported academic growth while promoting lifelong wellness habits. This series meant so much to the participants, the parents, the community, and the library. This grant relieved financial burdens for parents, and HTC afforded a significant and inspiring educational experience for our participating youths. Thank you is simply not enough.”
“HTC is proud to support programs that empower our communities through access to technology and education,” said Lisa Martin, Senior Marketing Coordinator. “Partnering with the Georgetown County Library to advance digital literacy among youth aligns with our mission to enrich lives through connectivity. By integrating health education with digital skills, this initiative not only bridged the digital divide but also helped prepare the next generation for a healthier, more informed future.”
