The popular Friends of the Waccamaw Library (FOWL) 1st Thursday Speaker Series is underway for Fall 2025. The series highlights a wide range of topics, most with connections to the South Carolina Lowcountry—our area’s rich and diverse histories, coastal ecology, and the unique language, customs, literature, and arts inspired by this region.

All presentations take place in person at 10 a.m. in the DeBordieu-Cross Auditorium at the Waccamaw Library, 41 St. Paul Place. Events are free and open to the public. Arrive early to enjoy piano music by the talented Tom Santopietro. For those unable to attend, videos of each talk are available afterward on the Georgetown County Library YouTube channel.

The Fall 2025 lineup continues with:

  • Thursday, Oct. 2 at 10 a.m.
Dr. Jodi A. Barnes (South Carolina Heritage Trust Archaeologist)
“Coming Home: Community-Centered Archaeology at White Marsh Plantation”
Part of the Library’s Lowcountry Gullah Heritage Celebration
  • Thursday, Nov. 6 at 10 a.m.
Dr. Elizabeth Chew (CEO of the South Carolina Historical Society)
“South Carolina History Is American History”
  • Thursday, Dec. 4 at 10 a.m.
    Dr. Ashley Oliphant (Author)
“Shell-abration Time: Best Strategies & Locations Finding Shells & Sharks Teeth on the Carolina Coast”

The season opened on Sept. 4 with Egyptologists Robin Snell and Steven Zambriczki, who explored connections between medicine and magic in ancient Egypt.
