Georgetown County officials are aware of public concerns and recent social media claims regarding the beach access point near 601 South Waccamaw Drive in Garden City. In response, the County Zoning Division has reviewed property records and confirmed that the area in question is private property.
According to a plat provided by the property owner, a portion of land that has been used informally by the public for parking in the past is part of the privately owned parcel located at 601 S. Waccamaw. It was assumed by many that this land was part of the public access, but that is not the case.
The County understands that there is confusion about recent changes to the area. Some residents have alleged that a sand dune was pushed into the public access by the owners. However, the Zoning Division has clarified that the sand currently located on the private property originated from the last road scraping conducted by the county to clear sand from the road. The sand was placed on the private property with the owner’s permission, as Department of Environmental Services (DES) regulations prohibit the county from returning scraped sand to the beach.
“We ask that community members seek clarification and facts before drawing conclusions or making accusations,” said Council Chairman Clint Elliott. “Our staff is always available to help residents understand what is public versus private property, and to ensure we address community concerns in a fair and transparent manner.”
The County appreciates the public’s interest in ensuring beach access remains open and accessible. However, it is important that this interest be balanced with respect for private property rights and the well-being of all residents and visitors.
